New Delhi, 8 January (H.S.): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with Maldives counterpart Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon here on Wednesday. During the meeting, several issues related to strengthening defence cooperation were discussed, which will also help in increasing the capacity of the National Defence Forces of Maldives. Today's discussion will add new energy to India-Maldives relations and help in defusing tensions.

Meaningful talks with Maumoon confirmed the readiness to enhance bilateral relations towards 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership'. The meeting focused on strengthening defence cooperation, which is part of India's 'Neighbour First' policy, which aims to enhance regional stability and security.

This conversation has taken place after the strained relations between the two countries after India withdrew its military personnel from the Maldives.

Singh comprehensively reviewed various aspects of bilateral defence and security cooperation. During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed various aspects of bilateral defence cooperation, including training, regular exercises, defence projects, workshops and seminars to enhance the capacity of the Maldives National Defence Forces as well as the supply of defence equipment.

Maumoon appreciated India's historical role as the 'first responder' for the Maldives. He thanked New Delhi for assisting Male in training defence and security personnel and enhancing modern infrastructure capabilities. India handed over defence equipment and stores to the Maldives at the request of the Maldives government.

India and Maldives share spiritual, historical, linguistic and ethnic ties. Maldives holds a special place in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy, which aims to bring stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
