New Delhi, 7 January (H.S.): The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the dates for the assembly elections in Delhi. Elections in Delhi will be held in a single phase, under which votes will be cast on all 70 seats on February 5. The election results will be declared on February 8.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with his fellow Election Commissioners, announced the Delhi Assembly elections at a press conference held at Vigyan Bhawan here on Tuesday. He said that the gazette notification of the election will be issued on January 10, 2025. The last date for filing nominations will be January 17, 2025. The date for scrutiny of nominations will be January 18, 2025. Candidature can be withdrawn till January 20, 2025. Voting will be held on February 05, and counting will be done on February 8. Discussing the technical aspect, he said that the election process should be completed before February 10.
He informed that there are more than 1.55 crore registered voters in the national capital. These include 83,49,645 male voters, 71,73,952 female voters and 1261 third gender voters. These include 52,554 voters in the age group of 18-19, who will vote for the first time.
It is worth noting that all the main parties have started their preparations for the elections. The Aam Aadmi Party led by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is trying to remain in power for the third consecutive time, while the BJP is trying to capture power in the national capital. The Congress is also preparing for a tough fight and hopes to win a surprising victory.
The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, could not win a single seat in the last two assembly elections. In the 2020 assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party won 62 out of 70 seats, while an old and big party like the BJP could win only 8 seats.
This time AAP has fielded candidates on all 70 seats. Congress has so far announced the names of a total of 48 candidates while BJP released its first list of 29 candidates on Saturday.
