Guwahati, 07 January (HS): Assam Police registered an FIR under Umrangsu Police Station under Section 3(5)/105 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and Section 21(1) of the BNS, which is related to the ongoing investigation of the Umrangsu mine incident.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the mine was being operated illegally. Police have arrested a person, Punish Nunisa, in this case. Investigation is underway and efforts are being made to obtain other information related to the incident.
It is worth mentioning that on January 6, 15 workers were reported trapped after water filled in the coal mine located in the 3 kilo area of Umrangsu. The administration has intensified efforts to save the lives of the trapped miners.
The workers had no chance to escape due to the sudden influx of water. The cause of the influx is yet to be confirmed, but initial reports suggest that the mine was flooded due to the rupture of an underground water source. The scene at the time of the accident was chaotic as the water level rose rapidly, closing the escape route and trapping the miners in the deep pit.
Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar Jha said that several people are trapped in the coal mine in Umrangsu area. They have not been able to confirm the exact number of people trapped yet.
After the news of the incident spread, emergency response teams were immediately activated.
