Kolkata, 7 January (H.S.) -

Amid rising global concerns about the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) following its spread in China, a case of HMPV infection was reported in Bengal two months ago. What stands out is the successful recovery of a six-month-old baby who was treated at a private Hospital in Kolkata. This achievement highlights that with timely intervention and proper medical care, the virus can be effectively tackled, eliminating the need for panic.

Dr. Saheli Dasgupta, a pediatric specialist at the Hospital, revealed that the case emerged when a couple traveled from Mumbai to Kolkata with their six-month-old child. The baby exhibited severe symptoms, including high fever, cold, cough, and diarrhea, which escalated to acute respiratory distress. The condition necessitated admission to the hospital's critical care unit for children.

A Triumph of Medical Expertise

According to Dr. Dasgupta, diagnostic tests involving nasal and throat swabs confirmed the presence of HMPV in the infant. Prompt supportive treatment was initiated, and through dedicated medical care, the child made a complete recovery within a few days.

“This virus is not new, but evolving strains may enhance its severity. However, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can ensure full recovery,” Dr. Dasgupta explained. She lauded the efforts of her team, emphasizing that this case serves as a testament to Bengal’s medical proficiency in addressing such infections.

Understanding HMPV and Its Symptoms

HMPV predominantly affects young children and the elderly, though people of all ages can be vulnerable. Common symptoms include high fever, cold, cough, diarrhea, and in severe cases, difficulty in breathing, which may require ventilatory support.

Stay Alert, Not Alarmed

Doctors stress the importance of avoiding panic. If symptoms resembling HMPV appear in children, parents should immediately consult medical professionals rather than attempting self-diagnosis or treatment.

This successful treatment in Bengal underscores the importance of early medical intervention. With the right care, even severe infections can be effectively managed, offering hope and assurance to concerned families.
