30 January (H.S.): A judicial committee will probe the fatal Maha Kumbh

stampede in Uttar Pradesh, which killed at least 30 people. The panel, chaired

by former Allahabad High Court judge Harsh Kumar, is entrusted with determining

the reasons of the accident and proposing future preventive measures. Following

the announcement, the committee, which included retired IAS official D K Singh

and former DGP V K Gupta, got right to work. Kumar underlined the need of a

thorough inquiry, noting, We have a one-month timeline but will try to

expedite it. On Friday, the panel will conduct an on-site examination to

gather insights and assess the causes that contributed to the tragedy.

According to preliminary findings, crowd management failure resulted in the

stampede, in which pilgrims rushed over barricades during a major bathing ceremony.
