Tamil Nadu, 30 January (H.S.): The Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu Home Secretary to appear before it on January 31, regarding the illegal practice of police not registering FIRs and filing final reports within the stipulated time.
Justice P Velmurugan issued the directive while hearing a petition filed by P Sundar, seeking direction to the Virugambakkam police to file a final report in a case registered in 2015. The court expressed concern over the police's failure to follow procedures and file final reports within the stipulated time, leaving many litigants struggling to get justice.
The judge noted that this was not an isolated incident, and many cases in Tamil Nadu have faced similar issues. The court emphasized that it is a well-settled proposition of law that FIRs must be sent to the magistrate concerned forthwith, and final reports must be filed within the period of limitation.
