Bhubaneswar, 15 January (H.S.): Rituals at Bhubaneswar's historic Lingaraj Temple have been suspended for the third consecutive day on Wednesday due to an ongoing dispute among the sevayats (temple servitors), which has disrupted customary activities.
Since Monday evening, the temple has been unable to conduct its daily religious practices, including rites and offerings, causing deep concern among devotees.
The conflict reportedly stems from unresolved disagreements between the Badu Nijog and the Brahmana Nijog. Despite repeated mediation attempts, the stalemate continues, severely impacting the temple’s operations.
In response, the Brahmana Nijog, a prominent assembly of temple priests, has convened an emergency meeting with the temple's trustee board and has sought intervention from Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan to help resolve the issue. The dispute, involving differences between the chief servitor and the Brahmana Nijog, has led to a complete halt of the deity’s rituals.
The Brahmana Nijog has emphasised the urgency of immediate action to restore the sanctity and normal functioning of the temple. Efforts to mediate are ongoing, with authorities aiming for a long-term resolution.
The continued disruption has raised widespread concerns about the impact on religious observances, which hold immense significance for devotees statewide. The temple administration has assured worshippers that steps are being taken to promptly resume rituals and restore normalcy.
