Kathmandu, 04

Sep (HS): Nepal Rashtra Bank is ready to issue new currency notes bearing the

controversial map that includes Indian territories.

The move is

expected to be completed within a year, according to a report by

Nepalkhabar.com.

Nepalkhabar.com

quoted Dilliram Pokharel, the joint spokesperson for Nepal Rashtra Bank saying

that the printing of the new banknotes has already begun. The revised map

features the Indian regions of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura as part of

Nepal. Pokharel said that the production of banknotes would take between six

months to a year.

The decision to

print the new banknotes was initially taken on May 3 under the leadership of

the then prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachand’. The controversy over

these territories dates back to May 2020, when the Nepalese Government led by

Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli unveiled the new map that included these

territories. The map was subsequently endorsed by the parliament.

India continues

to maintain that Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura are part of its territory.
