Rajnath Singh heads to Siachen: Up-close with India's Defence

Delhi, 22 April (H.S): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has embarked on a visit to Siachen today. During this visit, he is scheduled to hold talks with the armed personnel posted in the strategically crucial region. The Defence Ministry stated that the visit will provide an opportunity for the minister to interact with the brave soldiers stationed in Siachen. This visit comes at a significant time as it marks the 40th year of Indian Army's presence on the Siachen Glacier, which is known for its extreme climatic conditions. The 75 km long, 2 to 4 km wide glacier holds extreme geo-strategic importance for India.

The Defence Minister's visit was earlier cancelled due to inclement weather conditions, and it has been rescheduled after a month. The soldiers deployed in Siachen face constant challenges such as avalanches, landslides, and extreme temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. They also have to endure unique challenges posed by the terrain and weather conditions, including snow blindness, blizzards, and white-out conditions.

The troops at forward posts are at constant risk of avalanches and crevasses on glaciated surfaces and have to navigate difficult ice walls. This visit by the Defence Minister not only acknowledges the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers but also highlights the strategic importance of Siachen for India's security.
