Guwahati, 20 November (HS): Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has welcomed the announcement of the Assam government to change the name of Karimganj district to Sribhumi.

Assam and other parts of India have been named after some such names, whose dictionary meaning is not found in any Indian language. One such name was Karimganj. It is worth mentioning that before independence in 1919, Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore called this land Sundari Sribhumi.

The decision of the Assam government to change the name of Karimganj district to a name with literal meaning and in the memory of Kaviguru is a welcome decision. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Assam Pradesh has welcomed this decision.
