Mumbai, 09 August (H.S.): Residents of Nashik in Maharashtra were left alarmed after two earthquake tremors struck the district within a span of about five hours. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck Nashik at around 10 pm on Saturday, followed by another tremor of magnitude 3.3 at 5:33 am on Sunday. Teams from the district administration are conducting surveys in the affected areas.

Nashik District Collector Ayush Prasad on Sunday urged residents not to panic or believe rumours, while advising them to remain alert and follow necessary safety precautions.

“People should not be afraid. They should not believe any rumours. However, everyone should remain vigilant and take necessary safety measures,” Prasad said.

A district administration official said the seismic activity was recorded at a depth of five kilometres in the Bhanwad area, near the Hatgad mountain range along the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.

Mild tremors were reportedly felt in several parts of Nashik city and across the district, including the Surgana, Kalwan, Deola, Chandwad, Peth, Dindori and Niphad talukas. The tremors triggered panic among residents, with some people rushing out of their homes as a precautionary measure.

Cracks were reported in the walls of several houses in Bhader village in Surgana tehsil and Nanashi village in Dindori tehsil. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

The official said authorities also inspected dams in the affected areas and found no damage. District officials are continuing to monitor the situation and assess any possible impact of the seismic activity.

Nashik had also experienced earthquake tremors between July 25 and 28, as well as on August 6. The recurring seismic activity has contributed to heightened concern among residents in the district.
