Thiruvananthapuram, 09 August (H.S.)Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Sunday warned that the government would take stringent action against gangsters and anti-social elements, asserting that no criminal would be allowed to challenge the law or disturb public peace in the state.

Reacting to the arrest of Arjun Ayanki, who is accused in several criminal cases, Chennithala said Kerala was a state of people who valued peace and would not be allowed to become a haven for gangsters.

The minister said the government was committed to bringing under control not only Ayanki but all gangsters operating in the state. Those who harbour, protect or assist criminal elements would also be brought before the law, irrespective of any political or other influence they might enjoy.

Ensuring a peaceful life for citizens was the government's priority, and there would be no compromise in action against criminals, gangsters and anti-social elements, Chennithala said. Measures to intensify the crackdown had already been initiated.

With the Onam season approaching, the minister warned criminal groups against attempting to disrupt public life or create fear. Police stations across the state have been directed to prepare lists of gangsters, anti-social elements and those facing proceedings under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). Those identified would be placed under close police surveillance.

Responding to questions about alleged political protection enjoyed by some gangsters, Chennithala said such backing would not prevent the police from acting against them.

He pointed to Ayanki's arrest after days of alleged challenges to the police as evidence that no one was beyond the reach of the law.

The minister said the UDF government had been in office for only two months and rejected suggestions that it had encouraged such criminal networks. Anyone attempting to deliberately create trouble would face firm legal action, he added.
