Guwahati, 07 August (HS): Flood conditions in Assam have expanded once again, with the disaster now affecting 15 districts and impacting 168,701 people, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Two more bodies were recovered on Thursday—one each from Golaghat and Udalguri districts—taking the overall flood-related death toll in the state to 96.
The fresh wave of flooding has spread to 15 districts, including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Udalguri, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Nagaon, Darrang, Sonitpur, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Karbi Anglong and Dhemaji. A total of 481 villages across 39 revenue circles remain inundated, while 14,382.26 hectares of agricultural land are still under water. The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger mark.
The Assam government is accelerating relief and rehabilitation efforts in the worst-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. Damage assessment surveys are scheduled to begin on August 9. The government has already provided ₹15,000 as immediate assistance to each affected family and is continuing to disburse ₹9 lakh as ex gratia to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the floods.
Relief operations remain in full swing with 50 relief camps and 83 relief distribution centres functioning across the state. Around 10,111 people are currently sheltered in relief camps, while 35,596 others are receiving assistance through relief distribution centres.
The floods have also affected 41,475 animals, including 20,947 large animals, 13,713 small animals and 6,815 poultry. Official data shows that 38 kutcha houses and two pucca houses have been completely damaged, while hundreds of other houses and cattle sheds have suffered partial damage, particularly in Sivasagar and Darrang districts.
Rescue and relief operations are being carried out jointly by the SDRF, NDRF, Army, Air Force, Police, Fire and Emergency Services, district administrations and trained volunteers. During the latest operations, 151 people and four livestock were rescued using 13 boats. The state government has also deployed 93 medical teams to provide healthcare services in flood-affected areas.
Authorities continue to distribute essential relief materials, including rice, pulses, salt, mustard oil and cattle fodder, while restoration of damaged roads, bridges and other public infrastructure is underway. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior ministers are regularly reviewing the situation and monitoring relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts across the affected districts.----------
