Bhubaneswar, 06 August (H.S.): The Odisha government on Thursday indicated its willingness to review concerns related to health insurance coverage for journalists, with Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling assuring that the matter will be examined soon.

The statement comes amid growing discussions over the adequacy of existing insurance provisions for media professionals and calls for strengthening the scheme. The Minister said the government has already initiated discussions with the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department to assess the issue in detail.

Mahaling noted that journalists in the state are currently covered under the Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana, which provides health insurance benefits. However, the government is exploring whether additional measures or enhancements are needed to better serve the needs of the media community.

He added that further consultations will be held before taking a final decision, with a focus on strengthening the existing framework and improving its effectiveness.

Referring to broader healthcare coverage, the Minister said discussions have also been held regarding Ayushman cards in coordination with the Health Department and the I&PR Department. Emphasising the role of journalists as the fourth pillar of democracy, he assured that any concerns faced by them would be addressed promptly.

“If there are any issues under the existing scheme, the government will review them and take appropriate steps,” Mahaling said.
