Kolkata, 06 August (H.S.): A bid to smuggle gold out of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata was foiled after NSCBI Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate arrested a man from Rajasthan.
The accused, identified as Ram Avtar Sharma, was produced before the Barrackpore Court on Thursday.
According to the police, the incident came to light on Wednesday evening. Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted a scooter rider who was attempting to leave the domestic cargo area of the airport. During the search, police recovered nearly 400 grams of gold jewellery, estimated to be worth around ₹60 lakh in the market.
The police also seized several hundred grams of silver ornaments, including necklaces, bangles and rings.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the consignment of gold and silver was being transported to Burrabazar in central Kolkata.
As per information, Investigators are expected to seek the accused's custody to identify other members of the smuggling network and trace the source and intended recipients of the seized valuables. Further investigation is underway.
