Sivasagar (Assam), 06 August (HS): The Sivasagar district administration has intensified efforts to improve the flood situation by accelerating the drainage of accumulated water from Panbecha, Konwarpur, Betbari and several parts of Sivasagar town. Four high-capacity pumping machines deployed by the Water Resources Department and ONGC are operating round the clock to remove floodwater from the affected areas.
Assam Industries, Commerce, Public Enterprises and Cultural Affairs Minister and Guardian Minister of Sivasagar, Bimal Bora, has been personally supervising the dewatering operations for the past four days at the Moridikhowa sluice gate in Shantipur under Shantipur Gaon Panchayat. On Wednesday night, the minister monitored the work until around 2 a.m. Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain, departmental officials and local residents have also been extending support to the operation.
During his visit to the site on Wednesday evening, Bora reviewed the ongoing work and joined local residents in voluntary labour to facilitate the installation of an additional pumping machine for faster drainage.
Initially, three machines were removing nearly 65,000 litres of water per minute. With the installation of a fourth machine, the total drainage capacity has increased to around one lakh litres per minute. Officials said the enhanced pumping capacity is expected to speed up water evacuation and help improve the flood situation in the district.-----------
