(HS): Doyen in the field of Education and Sports and Padmashri Awadee Dr Dnyandev
Yashvantrao (D Y) Patil passed away due to old age on Tuesday in Kolahpur. He
was 90. He was hospitalised on Monday evening following uneasiness. The last
rites will be performed on Wednesday with the State Honour.
Born on October
22, 1936 in Ambap village in Kolhapur to a farmer, Dr Patil took education to
the students in rural areas. His political career started in 1957 when he was
elected Mayor of Kolhapur up to 1962. He was elected MLA in 1967 from Panhala
constituency. He, however moved away from active politics and concentrated in
the field of education.
In 1983 he was
instruments in establishing Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology (RAIT) and
thereafter spread network of D Y Patil group of institutions across the nation,
including deemed universities, private universities and colleges. The group has
about 180 educational institutions imparting education in engineering, medical
sciences, dental sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Management, Nursing,
Agriculture, Architecture, Law etc.
Dr D Y Patil was
nominated the Governor of Tripura and worked in that position from 2009 to
2013. He held additional charge of Governor of Bihar during the same period.
Navi Mumbai’s D
Y Patil Stadium is a monument of his contribution to the field of sports. The
world class stadium can conduct international cricket, football and other
matches.
Dr Patil was honoured
with civilian award Padmashri in 1991. He was awarded honorary doctorates and D
Lit by several universities.
His son Dr
Sanjay Patil, Satej (Banty) Patil, Vijay Patil, Dr Ajinkya Patil and daughter Dr
Nandita Palshetkar are active in the field of education.
