Kolkata, 11 August (H.S.): The West Bengal government has taken significant steps to expedite and streamline the state’s recruitment process, with a total of 17,714 vacancies proposed to be filled through the West Bengal Public Service Commission (PSC).

The decision follows a review meeting held on July 30 between the Chief Minister and various recruitment agencies, including the PSC. The government has directed the agencies to speed up the conduct of pending examinations and publication of results.

According to a brief issued by the state government ahead of a press conference with recruitment agencies on August 11, steps will also be taken to transfer the responsibility for certain recruitments currently conducted through the Municipal Service Commission and Cooperative Service Commission to the PSC. The concerned departments will complete the necessary formalities in this regard.

2,490 Group-A Vacancies from 54 Departments

The PSC has currently received requisitions for 2,490 vacancies from 54 state government departments. These include posts such as Judicial Officers, WBCS (Executive), Police, Audit and Accounts Service, Legal Service and Assistant Engineers, among other Group-A positions.

In addition, 2,848 vacancies are to be filled in Group-B and equivalent categories.

A further 12,376 vacancies are proposed to be filled in Group-C, including clerical-level and equivalent posts.

Together, the three categories account for 17,714 vacancies.

Results of 12.65 Lakh Candidates to Be Published

The government brief stated that results involving around 12.65 lakh candidates are pending publication at various stages of the recruitment process.

These include examinations conducted at different levels, such as screening tests, preliminary examinations and main examinations.

Recruitment Notifications for 8,006 Vacancies Likely Soon

The PSC is also expected to issue recruitment notifications for around 8,006 new vacancies across various departments in the coming period.

The upcoming recruitment process will also provide the benefit of additional age relaxation announced by the state government. The brief referred to a memorandum issued by the Finance Department on May 16, 2026, in this connection.

Revised OBC Reservation Not Expected to Affect Exam Schedule

The government has clarified that the revised OBC reservation published by the Backward Classes Welfare Department on August 7, 2026, is not expected to affect the scheduled conduct of examinations.

The examinations will be held according to the schedule announced by the Commission.

If any changes are required in the number of posts under the reserved OBC categories, these will be reflected at the time of publication of the results.

Technology to Be Used to Streamline Recruitment

The PSC has also initiated measures aimed at bringing wider technological improvements to the recruitment process.

The proposed measures include adopting secure digital procedures, expediting the publication of examination results and strengthening the system for recommending suitable candidates based on the respective examinations.

The government has also stressed the need to strengthen the Commission’s infrastructure on the lines of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) model and ensure strict adherence to an annual examination calendar.

The government and recruitment agencies expect that these measures will help clear pending examinations and results faster while paving the way for recruitment to a large number of government vacancies in the coming months.
