Guwahati, 11 August (HS): The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) has stepped up relief, sanitation and rehabilitation efforts in flood-hit Sivasagar and Charaideo districts of Upper Assam, which have suffered extensive damage to lives, property, agriculture and livestock.
The floods affected around 3.32 lakh people across 622 villages, with Charaideo being the worst-hit district, followed by Sivasagar. Nearly 45,342 hectares of agricultural land were inundated, while 32,477 people were displaced to 81 government relief camps. More than 74,000 livestock were also reportedly lost.
BKS workers from Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Nalbari and Kamrup districts have distributed relief materials and arranged paddy seedlings for plantation across 1,500 bighas of land. School uniforms are also being provided to more than 5,000 students whose education has been disrupted by the floods.
Three farmer producer companies associated with the BKS have collected Rs 3 lakh for contribution to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The Jorhat district unit has also organised traditional herbal medicine and health check-up camps in flood-affected areas, along with training on the use of locally available medicinal plants and home remedies.
A 50-member team from Morigaon has been working in flood-hit areas of Sivasagar for the past four days, distributing relief materials and assisting affected families with house reconstruction, sanitation and other rehabilitation activities. A truckload of cattle feed is also being arranged for flood-affected livestock.
Units in Barpeta and Bongaigaon are preparing livelihood-based rehabilitation programmes, including mushroom cultivation, animal husbandry and other self-employment initiatives. These programmes will be implemented in the affected areas once the floodwaters recede.
The BKS aims to reach around 5,000 flood-affected families through its relief, rehabilitation and livelihood-support initiatives and help them regain self-reliance.
