Thiruvananthapuram,06 July (H.S.):Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Kerala over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts and a yellow alert for six others.
The orange alert indicates the likelihood of very heavy rainfall ranging between 12 cm and 20 cm, while the yellow alert forecasts heavy rain of 7 cm to 12 cm. The yellow alert has been issued for Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.
The IMD has warned that persistent rainfall could cause widespread disruption, including waterlogging on major roads, poor visibility affecting traffic, and flooding in low-lying areas and along riverbanks. Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Strong winds accompanying the rain may uproot trees, damage power lines and disrupt electricity supply. The weather agency has also cautioned about the possibility of partial damage to houses and huts, while hilly regions remain vulnerable to landslides and landslips. Along the coast, loose and temporary structures could be affected by strong winds and rough weather.
According to the IMD, Mananthavady in Wayanad recorded the highest rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, receiving 5 cm of rain. Several other locations, including Thiruvananthapuram, Punalur, Aryankavu, Kayamkulam, Mavelikkara, Haripad, Peerumedu, Munnar, Ottappalam and parts of Kozhikode and Kannur, recorded around 3 cm of rainfall.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a warning of squally weather along and off the Kerala coast, with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during the warning period.
A high wave alert also remains in force along the coasts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram until July 6. Waves measuring between 3.4 and 3.6 metres are expected, posing a risk to coastal activities. Authorities have urged the public to avoid recreational activities near the shoreline and exercise extreme caution during marine operations until sea conditions improve.
