Guwahati, 05 July (HS): Assam Agriculture, Irrigation and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on Sunday launched the ceremonial distribution of one lakh horticulture saplings and pulse seeds at the Horticulture Research Station of Assam Agricultural University (AAU) in Kahikuchi, Kamrup. The initiative aims to promote horticulture and strengthen commercial farming across the state.

Addressing the programme, the minister announced that the Agriculture Department has set a target of distributing one crore high-yielding horticulture saplings across Assam. He encouraged farmers to adopt multi-cropping by cultivating crops such as coconut, black pepper, pineapple and dragon fruit on the same land to increase productivity and boost farm incomes.

Hazarika urged the state's youth to take up commercial farming instead of migrating for low-paying jobs. He stressed the need for innovation and practical solutions in agriculture, while cautioning against blaming unverified factors for poor crop yields.

Reiterating the government's commitment to farmers' welfare, the minister warned of strict action against traders selling fertilizers above the maximum retail price. He also said timely distribution of paddy seeds has benefited farmers this season and highlighted ongoing efforts to increase farmer registrations under the PM-KISAN and PM Fasal Bima Yojana schemes. Farmers were also encouraged to utilize the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF).

The minister further called on cultivators to expand oil palm and pulse cultivation to help reduce the country's dependence on imports. He also cautioned against misinformation regarding ethanol blending, stating that such narratives adversely affect farmers' economic interests.

During the programme, fruit saplings, black gram and brown gram seeds, along with spraying machines, were distributed to nearly 100 farmers. The event was attended by AAU Vice-Chancellor Dipjyoti Rajkhowa, Director of Horticulture Nripen Ch Das and other dignitaries.-----------
