Kolkata, 04 July (H.S.): Two alleged drug traffickers were arrested with approximately 350 grams of brown sugar before they could deliver the contraband in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, police said on Saturday.

The accused have been identified as Hasmat Sheikh, a resident of Malda district, and Liyakat Ali, a resident of Rajganj. Police also seized a scooter allegedly used for transporting the narcotics.

According to police, acting on a specific tip-off about an impending drug transaction, officers from Bhorer Alo Police Station conducted a late-night operation on Friday in the Motagachh area along the Ambari State Road in Rajganj block.

During the operation, the two suspects were intercepted under suspicious circumstances. A search led to the recovery of around 350 grams of brown sugar concealed in a packet, following which both men were taken into custody.

Preliminary investigation suggests that Hasmat Sheikh had brought the contraband from Malda and was handing it over to Liyakat Ali in Rajganj when they were apprehended.

The accused are scheduled to be produced before a court in Jalpaiguri on Saturday. Further investigation is underway.
