Guwahati, 31 July (HS): The Assam government is exploring the possibility of constructing prefabricated houses to provide quick shelter to families displaced by the recent devastating floods in Upper Assam, as many affected residents remain unable to return to their homes.

Sharing an update on social media on Friday, Assam Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota expressed gratitude to all individuals and organisations that extended support during the flood crisis. He noted that although floodwaters have receded in several areas, many homes remain uninhabitable due to prolonged waterlogging and heavy damage, leaving families without safe accommodation for the next two to three months.

To address the situation, the state is looking for partners capable of designing, manufacturing and installing prefabricated houses suitable for Assam's high rainfall and humid climate. The government plans to begin with a small pilot project to evaluate the performance of such structures before considering wider implementation.

Dr. Kota also invited organisations and experts with experience in prefabricated housing solutions to reach out directly and assist the government, stressing that timely intervention is critical for rehabilitating flood-affected families.

The recent floods caused extensive damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts. Even after floodwaters receded, thick layers of mud have made many villages unlivable, with several houses either severely damaged or completely destroyed. The government is now exploring every possible option to ensure speedy rehabilitation and temporary housing for those affected.----------
