Kolkata, 01 Aug (H.S.) : The self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 commenced across West Bengal on Saturday and will continue until August 15, allowing residents to submit their census details online before the door-to-door verification exercise begins.
Citizens can complete the process by logging into the official Census self-enumeration portal, filling in the required information and submitting the online form. Upon successful submission, the system generates a unique 11-digit self-enumeration ID.
Residents are required to retain this ID and present it to census enumerators when they visit households for verification during the subsequent phase of the exercise.
Officials said the self-enumeration facility is aimed at improving the accuracy of census data by enabling individuals to enter their own information. No supporting documents are required either during the online submission or at the time of physical verification.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Smita Pandey, who is also the Principal Census Officer for the KMC area, confirmed that residents will not be asked to produce supporting documents during the verification process.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the Census 2027 exercise had been delayed in the state because the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government did not act on a communication sent by the Union government in February last year.
Addressing reporters after an emergency meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Friday, Adhikari alleged that the previous state government neither initiated the preparatory work nor responded to the Centre's communication, resulting in West Bengal falling behind several other states in the census process.
He also announced that Census 2027 will be conducted through a digital platform. Enumerators will collect data using a dedicated mobile application, and the information will be uploaded directly to a central server, replacing the conventional paper-based system.
