Guwahati, 32 July (HS): The Assam government on Friday unveiled a fresh package of relief and rehabilitation measures for flood-affected families in Upper Assam, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing financial assistance, support for schools and a time-bound plan to restore normalcy in the worst-hit districts.

Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said eligible flood-affected families will begin receiving an immediate assistance of ₹15,000 from August 2 or 3.

To assess the extent of losses, the state government will launch a comprehensive damage survey from August 7 in the four worst-affected districts—Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. The survey has been directed to be completed within 15 days.

In a major relief for students, the government has allocated ₹8 crore for school uniforms, while free textbooks have already been supplied to ensure that academic activities resume without delay.

The Chief Minister also announced financial assistance ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh for each flood-affected school to undertake cleaning and restoration work, particularly in campuses damaged by floodwater and mud deposits.

Sarma said the government is aiming to reopen schools in the four flood-hit Upper Assam districts from August 9, subject to improvement in the ground situation.

As part of the rehabilitation drive, a team of ministers will visit Upper Assam on Friday to monitor relief and recovery operations. The Chief Minister further announced that special development packages will be prepared for Charaideo and Sivasagar to rebuild damaged roads and other essential infrastructure.

The latest announcements form part of the Assam government's broader strategy to expedite relief, rehabilitation and the restoration of normal life in the flood-ravaged districts.----------
