Guwahati, 03 July (HS): The two-day Assam edition of Youth Indian Parliament 2026 commenced on Friday at the Central Hall of the Assam Legislative Assembly, bringing together 170 meritorious students from across the state to experience the functioning of parliamentary democracy and public governance.

The programme was inaugurated by Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, who encouraged students to actively engage in democratic processes and develop leadership qualities, critical thinking and a sense of social responsibility. He described the Youth Parliament initiative as an important platform for nurturing informed and responsible future citizens.

Organised jointly by the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Assam and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the event aims to familiarise participants with parliamentary procedures, public policy, governance and law-making through interactive sessions and debates.

A total of 170 students from 71 schools across 33 districts have been selected for the event after district-level competitions involving more than 1,000 participants. The top 25 performers will earn the opportunity to represent Assam at the national-level Youth Indian Parliament.

The organisers said the initiative has, over the past two years, provided students with a valuable platform to debate contemporary issues, understand legislative processes and strengthen democratic values. The programme will conclude on Saturday, with Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das expected to attend as the chief guest.
