New Delhi, 29 July (H.S.): The Delhi High Court has ordered the removal of objectionable online content targeting former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. A bench headed by Justice Jyoti Singh directed the respondents in the matter to be served notices through their respective social media handles.
The bench made it clear that it cannot expect social media platforms to remove objectionable content on their own initiative. The court observed that the issue requires judicial examination and appropriate directions can only be issued after scrutiny by the court.
During the hearing, Yuvraj Singh’s counsel informed the court that two links containing objectionable content had already been removed. However, other links were allegedly being used to commercially exploit Yuvraj Singh’s name without his consent or authorisation.
The High Court has previously passed similar orders to protect the personality rights of several prominent personalities. Those protected include cricketer Abhishek Sharma, Member of Parliament Ravi Kishan, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, actors Arjun Kapoor and Allu Arjun, spiritual preacher Aniruddhacharya, Malayalam actor Mohanlal, former MP and cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Acharya Balkrishna, actress Sonakshi Sinha, Baba Ramdev, actress Kajol, actor Vivek Oberoi, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, actors Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, actress and MP Jaya Bachchan, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Telugu actor Nagarjuna, actress Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and filmmaker Karan Johar, among others.
