Guwahati, 29 July (HS): Guwahati Police foiled an alleged vehicle trafficking attempt and arrested six persons for allegedly conspiring to sell a rented vehicle illegally in Nagaland.
According to the East Guwahati Police District, Hatigaon Police received a complaint on July 27 from vehicle owner Ruprekha Das, stating that her vehicle (AS-01-GN-2716), rented to Nabajyoti Medhi for two days, had not been returned after the rental period expired.
Using the vehicle's GPS tracker, the owner traced its movement towards Mariani. Acting on the information, Hatigaon Police launched an enquiry and gathered intelligence suggesting that the vehicle was being transported to Nagaland for illegal sale.
In coordination with Titabor and Mariani Police, a joint operation was carried out, leading to the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of six accused. Police also seized two vehicles allegedly used in the crime—a Bolero Pickup (AS-22-AC-0643) and a Mahindra Thar (AR-01P-3745).
The arrested accused have been identified as Abhinash Saikia, Bikash Das, Kaustav Jyoti Saikia, Bhaskar Barua, Prandip Baruah and Anurag Choudhary, all residents of Golaghat and Jorhat districts.
Preliminary investigation suggests the accused had conspired to fraudulently dispose of the rented vehicle by selling it outside Assam. A case has been registered at Hatigaon Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
All six accused have been arrested and produced before the court with a prayer for police remand. Further investigation is underway.--------------
