Nagpur, 29 July

(HS): A part of the security wall at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International

Airport at Nagpur collapsed due to very heavy rains on Tuesday posing serious

problems relating to security.

CISF immediately

closed the area without affecting the flight operations. CRPF personnel were

posted near the collapsed wall to prevent any unauthorised entry.

Nagpur city and

rural areas were lashed with very heavy rains on Tuesday. The rains according

to experts were like a cloudburst. Met Office, however, declined to relate it

to cloudburst.

CISF had earlier

demanded reconstruction of the old wall as the existing boundary wall is in dilapidated

condition. The airport has been recently handed over to GMR Company for

operation and maintenance. The demand will be placed before the company again.

GMR has

undertaken repair of the wall and will take decisions on construction of new

wall soon along with drainage system and

security measures.
