New Delhi, 29 July (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the deaths of two persons allegedly caused by exposure to toxic gas inside a sewage treatment plant at a residential society in Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida). The Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and the Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddh Nagar, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks. It observed that the incident raises serious concerns of human rights violations.

The Commission said the report should include the current status of the investigation as well as details of any compensation provided to the families of the deceased.

According to media reports, the incident occurred on July 26 when a sanitation worker entered the sewage tank to carry out cleaning operations and lost consciousness after being exposed to toxic gas. A security guard subsequently entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him but also fell unconscious.

Both men were later pulled out of the tank by police and fire service personnel and rushed to a hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
