New Delhi, 29 July (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the explosion at a metal processing factory in Assam’s Cachar district that resulted in the death of four workers and left two others critically injured. The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Assam and the Superintendent of Police, Cachar, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

The NHRC said the report should include details regarding the health condition of the injured workers and the compensation provided to the families of the deceased as well as the injured labourers.

According to media reports, a factory explosion on July 26 caused molten metal to spill onto workers, resulting in the deaths of four labourers and leaving two others seriously injured. More than 100 workers were reportedly present inside the factory at the time of the incident.

Local residents and the families of the deceased have alleged that similar accidents had occurred at the factory in the past. The Commission observed that if the media reports are accurate, the incident would amount to a serious violation of human rights.
