Medinipur, 29 July (H.S.): Nearly eight decades after Independence, the official residence of the District Magistrate of West Medinipur continues to be known as Hastings House, a name dating back to the British era. A demand has now been raised to rename the building after revolutionary freedom fighter Shaheed Khudiram Bose.

Midnapore MLA Dr Shankar Kumar Guchhait submitted a written proposal to the District Magistrate on Tuesday evening, urging that the building be renamed Shaheed Khudiram Bose Bhavan.

In his application, the MLA said that retaining a name associated with British rule for an important administrative building in independent India is not in keeping with the country’s history and national consciousness. He proposed that naming the building after Shaheed Khudiram Bose would be a fitting tribute to the heroes of India’s freedom struggle.

Dr Guchhait said Khudiram Bose was not only a source of pride for Midnapore but also an immortal symbol of India’s freedom movement. Naming a government building after him, he said, would better reflect the history, national sentiment and spirit of independence.

The proposal has also triggered discussion on social media. While many people have welcomed the initiative and described it as an appropriate step towards honouring freedom fighters, some have expressed differing views on the issue.
