Bhopal, 29 July (H.S.) On International Tiger Day, Madhya Pradesh, the state with the highest number of tigers in the country, reiterated its commitment to wildlife conservation with a renewed resolve. Speaking at a state-level function held at the Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium in Bhopal on Wednesday, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav highlighted that the state is consistently setting new benchmarks in the field of tiger conservation.
He noted that while the 2022 census recorded 785 tigers in Madhya Pradesh, the state now anticipates approaching the 1,000-tiger mark in the upcoming census. On this occasion, the logo for Ratapani Tiger Reserve was released, the Pench Advanced Warning System was inaugurated and several initiatives aimed at strengthening wildlife conservation were unveiled.
Madhya Pradesh emerges as a leader in tiger conservation
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav stated that Madhya Pradesh has emerged as the country's strongest hub for tiger conservation. The state's forest wealth, protected areas, and the dedicated efforts of the Forest Department have created a safe environment for tigers. With 785 tigers recorded in the 2022 census, current efforts suggest the population could approach 1,000 in the next count. He hailed this as a major achievement resulting from the combined efforts of the Forest Department, local communities, and public participation.
New technology and identity for wildlife conservation
During the event, the Chief Minister viewed an exhibition on wildlife conservation activities and inaugurated special vehicles designated for conservation work. He unveiled the official logo for Ratapani Tiger Reserve and launched the Pench Advanced Warning System. Booklets focused on biodiversity and wildlife conservation were also released. Additionally, teasers for documentaries on active wildlife management were shown, conveying a message to take conservation campaigns to the masses. Nature Conservation: A Core Tenet of Indian Culture
Referring to the occasion of Guru Purnima, the Chief Minister stated that this festival symbolizes the Indian tradition of leading from darkness to light. He noted that for centuries, India has embraced respect for nature and the spirit of coexistence as the foundation of life. Citing scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose, he mentioned that the concept of life existing in trees had long been acknowledged within the Indian tradition of knowledge. This very spirit of conserving nature and wildlife remains an integral part of our cultural identity today.
Significant Presence of Tigers Around Bhopal
The Chief Minister remarked that if there is any place on Earth where tigers safely inhabit areas closest to human populations, it is Bhopal and its surrounding region. He stated that the state government is paying special attention to the conservation of gharials in rivers, alongside tiger conservation. Previously, gharials released in the state would often migrate to other states; however, systems are now being developed to ensure their safe conservation within Madhya Pradesh itself. Efforts to prevent loss of human life caused by elephant movement have also yielded positive results.
Appreciation for the Forest Department's Work
Highlighting the grandeur of the Mata Mahalakshmi Temple in Orchha, the Chief Minister remarked that while all government departments are important, he derives special satisfaction from working with the Forest Department. He mentioned that the state government is promoting the exchange of wildlife and conservation cooperation with other states, thereby giving fresh momentum to biodiversity conservation.
Honoring the Guardians of Forest Conservation
Speaking on the occasion, Head of Forest Force Shubhranjan Sen stated that a forest is truly healthy only when tigers, tigresses, and their cubs are safe. He emphasized that tiger conservation is directly linked to the protection of nature, water sources, and human life. During the ceremony, forest personnel, forest protection committees, eco-development committees, village forest committees and distinguished individuals who have made outstanding contributions to wildlife conservation were honored.
Additionally, members of the State Wildlife Board who have been awarded the Padma Shri were felicitated. School and college students conveyed the message of nature conservation through cultural performances at the event. Senior officials and staff of the Forest Department, including Minister of State for Forest and Environment Dilip Ahirwar, were present at the ceremony.
