Purulia, 26 July (H.S.): The district president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), Kiriti Acharya, was arrested in West Bengal's Purulia district in connection with an alleged extortion case. The arrest comes amid an ongoing crackdown on cases involving alleged extortion and intimidation in the district.

According to police sources, Sanjay Bauri lodged a written complaint at Para Police Station on Saturday, accusing Acharya of extortion and criminal intimidation. Based on the complaint, police registered a case under the relevant provisions of law and launched an investigation, following which Acharya was arrested.

The accused was produced before the Raghunathpur Court on Sunday, where the police sought his custodial remand for further interrogation.

The police said the investigation is continuing and that all allegations mentioned in the complaint are being examined.

The arrest follows a series of similar actions in Purulia over the past few weeks in cases involving alleged extortion and cheating on the pretext of providing jobs. Earlier, police arrested Sujay Bandyopadhyay, Assistant Sabhadhipati of the Purulia Zilla Parishad; Saddam Hossain Ansari, district president of the Minority Cell; Gaurav Singh, district president of the Trinamool Youth Congress; Tushar Abasthi, described as a close associate of several TMC leaders; and Chandan Singh Mall, block president of the Trinamool Labour Union in Barabazar.

With the arrest of the TMCP district president, the investigation has gained further political significance. Police said the probe is underway and all aspects of the allegations are being thoroughly examined.
