Purulia, 26 July (H.S.): A temporary driver attached to the Para Block Land and Land Reforms Department in West Bengal's Purulia district has been arrested for allegedly taking money from a man on the pretext of preparing land documents.

The accused has been identified as Chandi Modak, a resident of the Para area. He was arrested from Para Bazar following a police investigation.

According to police sources, Modak also runs a shop where various online services are provided. In addition, he was working as a temporary driver with the Para Block Land and Land Reforms Department.

The police alleged that on Saturday, the accused collected money from a person by promising to arrange land-related documents. Investigators said several similar allegations had surfaced against him in the past, but no legal action could be initiated as no formal written complaint had been lodged.

Following the submission of a written complaint on Saturday, police registered a case, launched an investigation and arrested the accused.

The accused was produced before the Raghunathpur Sub-Divisional Court on Sunday. The court remanded him to four days of police custody for further interrogation.

The Police are investigating whether any other persons were involved in the alleged cheating and are probing all aspects of the case.
