Kolkata, 26 July (H.S.): Political rhetoric intensified in West Bengal on Sunday over the violence that broke out during Friday's protest march in Kolkata against the alleged NEET examination irregularities. State Labour and Transport Minister Arjun Singh launched a sharp attack on the CPI(M) and Left-affiliated student organisations, warning of strict action against those allegedly involved in the violence.

Speaking to reporters after attending the Khuti Puja of Bijoypur Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee in Panihati, the minister was asked about the alleged involvement of Left student organisations in the attack on journalists during the Dharmatala protest.

Responding to the question, Singh said, “The CPI(M) should not think that people have forgotten its past atrocities. They are trying to create unrest through anti-national activities. Let them come to the field again; we will show them. We know how to respond in the language they understand.”

The minister further alleged that some ultra-Left elements were attempting to create disturbances. Referring to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Maoist activities, Singh said that those indulging in such activities would be dealt with firmly under the law.

Commenting on the alleged attack on journalists during the Dharmatala protest, Singh said those arrested had already been booked under the West Bengal Prevention of Violent Activities Act, commonly referred to as the anti-goonda law. “You have seen the law under which those arrested have been booked. Once the remaining accused are arrested, you will see what further legal action is taken. If the CPI(M) crosses the line, we know how to deal with it. We know how to foil any conspiracy aimed at dividing the country,” he said.

The remarks came in the wake of the violence that erupted near Dorina Crossing on Friday during a protest march over the alleged NEET question paper leak. Police have so far arrested 14 persons in connection with the incident. Investigators have alleged that outsiders infiltrated the march and attacked police personnel and journalists. However, Left-affiliated student organisations, including the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Students' Organisation (DSO), have denied any involvement in the violence.

The police investigation into the incident is continuing, with CCTV footage and other evidence being examined to identify those allegedly involved.
