Purba Bardhaman, 24 July (H.S.): High drama unfolded inside the Katwa Sub-Divisional Court premises in Purba Bardhaman on Friday after a woman allegedly thrashed a youth with her slipper for allegedly eve-teasing her. The incident created a commotion in the court complex. Police detained both the accused youth and the woman's husband and have initiated an investigation.
According to the police, Jaba Ghosh, a resident of Gafulia village under Katwa police station, had come to the court along with her mother Nayan Devi and her husband Rajesh Nandi for personal work. While they were standing near the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), a youth identified as Kabir Hossain Sheikh, a resident of Lohapota village, allegedly kept following the woman.
The woman alleged that the youth made obscene gestures and repeatedly harassed her. She confronted him, grabbed him by the collar, removed her slipper, and began beating him in full public view. A crowd quickly gathered at the spot.
On learning about the incident, the woman's husband also reached the spot and allegedly assaulted the youth. Court security personnel and police intervened promptly to bring the situation under control. Women police personnel escorted the woman away, while the accused youth and the woman's husband were taken to Katwa police station.
The woman later lodged a written complaint, alleging that the youth had been following her for quite some time and repeatedly behaved in an obscene manner, prompting her to retaliate.
The accused, however, denied the allegations, claiming that he had not misbehaved with the woman.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident. The episode has also raised questions about security arrangements inside the court premises.
