Jalpaiguri, 24 July (H.S.): A man from West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district was allegedly duped of ₹1.20 lakh by cyber fraudsters who posed as employees of a public sector bank. The incident took place in the Barnish Gram Panchayat area of Maynaguri block.

According to the police, the victim, Ajay Biswas, received a phone call on Thursday night from a person claiming to be a bank official. The caller informed him that he needed to pay the premium for his health insurance and said that some money would first be credited to his bank account by the bank.

The fraudster then sent an app file to Ajay through WhatsApp and instructed him to install it and follow a series of on-screen steps by clicking various options. Shortly after he complied with the instructions, ₹1.20 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account.

Realising that he had been cheated, Ajay Biswas lodged a written complaint at the Maynaguri Cyber Assistance Centre on Friday.

Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities have once again urged the public not to install unknown applications or share banking information with anyone claiming to be a bank representative over the phone.
