Kolkata, 24 July (H.S.): A fresh First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Police Station based on a complaint filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar. The case has been registered under eight sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including four non-bailable offences.

According to the complaint, Rajib Sarkar alleged that remarks made by Abhishek Banerjee during the demolition of a party office in Amtala, in which he allegedly spoke of taking revenge, made him fear for his life. The complaint also referred to a controversial statement allegedly made earlier by TMC leader Madan Mitra regarding the use of criminals and contract killers.

The complainant claimed that since he was the first person to lodge a complaint against Abhishek Banerjee, he believes the alleged threats were directed specifically at him.

Based on the complaint, Bidhannagar Cyber Police registered an FIR under eight provisions of the BNS. The non-bailable sections invoked are Sections 196, 198, 351(2), and 353(2). The bailable sections include 192, 353(1)(b), and 353(1)(c). Section 59 has also been added, which is not an independent offence but applies in conjunction with the principal offences, and its legal effect depends on the nature of the main charges.

The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
