Security has been stepped up across Coimbatore ahead of Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan's visit on Wednesday for the inauguration of the GKNM Nursing College at GKNM Hospital in Papanaickenpalayam.
The Vice President is scheduled to arrive from New Delhi by a special flight before proceeding to the hospital campus, where he will inaugurate the new nursing college at 5 p.m. and deliver the inaugural address.
The function is expected to draw senior doctors, healthcare professionals, academicians, public representatives and other invited guests. The new institution is expected to strengthen nursing education and healthcare training facilities in the region.
After the inaugural programme, the Vice President will travel by road to the Coimbatore International Airport and board a special flight back to New Delhi later in the evening.
In preparation for the visit, the Coimbatore City Police have put in place elaborate security arrangements across the city. Police Commissioner Kannan is personally supervising the operations, with a large contingent of personnel deployed along the Vice President’s convoy route, at the event venue and at other sensitive locations.
As part of the security protocol, several parts of the city have been declared Red Zones and the operation of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles has been prohibited. The restrictions came into force at 11 a.m. on Tuesday and will remain in effect until 11 a.m. on Thursday.
The restricted areas include Uppilipalayam, Race Course, Avinashi Road, Lakshmi Mills Junction, the GKNM Hospital campus, HOBS, CODISSIA, Peelamedu, Chitra, Nehru Nagar, Kalapatti, Chinniyampalayam and adjoining localities.
Police have warned that strict action will be taken against anyone violating the drone ban. Traffic restrictions and diversions will also be enforced on roads forming part of the Vice President’s convoy route. Motorists have been advised to follow traffic advisories and cooperate with officials to ensure smooth movement during the high-profile visit.
