New Delhi, 21 July (H.S.): The political atmosphere in the national capital turned heated on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament over the NEET paper leak issue. Tensions continue to prevail following clashes between protesters and police during the ‘Chalo Sansad’ (March to Parliament) rally organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Police used tear gas shells and resorted to mild force to prevent protesters from moving towards Parliament.
Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that the march towards Parliament would continue on Tuesday as well. Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has also postponed his decision to end his hunger strike in protest against the police action. On the other hand, Delhi Police has registered an FIR against unidentified persons at Connaught Place Police Station in connection with violence during the march and vandalism of government vehicles.
Addressing supporters at the protest site at Jantar Mantar, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said that the party remained firm on continuing its movement. He announced that the march towards Parliament would proceed on Tuesday as planned. Dipke alleged that protesters were subjected to harsh and excessive action by police during Monday’s demonstration.
According to Dipke, Sonam Wangchuk was scheduled to end his indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday and had also been persuaded to do so. However, following the police action during the protest, Wangchuk changed his decision and decided to continue his fast.
During Monday’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, several incidents of pushing, scuffles and clashes were reported between protesters and security personnel at different locations. As the situation escalated, police and paramilitary forces used tear gas shells and mild force to disperse the protesters. Subsequently, incidents of violence and vandalism of vehicles were reported from some areas.
Taking the vandalism of government and other vehicles during the march seriously, Delhi Police has registered an FIR against unidentified persons at Connaught Place Police Station. The police are investigating the entire incident and are examining CCTV footage and video recordings from the protest sites to identify those involved in the violence.
Meanwhile, Safdarjung Hospital has issued a fresh health bulletin regarding the condition of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on hunger strike. According to the hospital, Wangchuk’s condition is currently stable, with some improvement recorded over the past 24 hours. Doctors said that all his vital parameters are within normal and stable ranges.
The hospital stated that Wangchuk’s blood sugar level remains below the normal range; however, improvement has been observed in his blood test reports after he was administered oral rehydration solution (ORS) and potassium syrup. Doctors said that he is still recovering from mild to moderate dehydration.
Wangchuk continues to remain under observation of a multidisciplinary team of specialists from Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, and his treatment is ongoing.
