Thiruvananthapuram, 02 July (H.S.): Kerala is set to witness another spell of widespread rainfall over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain and thunderstorms across the State until July 7 and issuing yellow alerts for several districts in phases.
On Thursday, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod have been placed under a yellow alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places. The warning will be expanded on Friday to include Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Malappuram, while the three northern districts will continue to remain under alert.
The wet weather is expected to intensify further on Saturday, when Pathanamthitta and Kottayam will also come under a yellow alert along with Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. By Sunday, the alert will be confined once again to Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.
According to the IMD, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely across most parts of Kerala through July 7. The department has also issued separate advisories warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and rough sea conditions for fishermen until Saturday. A fresh spell of heavy rainfall is expected from Monday to Wednesday.
Authorities have cautioned that persistent rain could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, poor visibility and traffic congestion, particularly in urban centres. Strong winds accompanying thunderstorms may uproot trees, damage power lines and disrupt road transport and electricity supply. Farmers have also been advised to take precautions as standing crops nearing harvest could suffer damage due to heavy rain and gusty winds.
The IMD has further warned of the possibility of landslides in vulnerable hilly regions and urged people living in such areas to remain vigilant. Residents have been advised to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, stay away from weak or damaged structures, and strictly follow safety advisories issued by district authorities and disaster management agencies.
