Kolkata, 02 July (H.S.): Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra has received support from an unexpected quarter after protesters allegedly hurled eggs and cow dung at her during a party meeting in Nadia district.

Veteran CPI(M) leader, former Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya strongly condemned the incident in a social media post, despite describing Moitra as his political opponent.

Mahua Moitra may be my political rival, but she is an elected Member of Parliament. As far as I know, there are no allegations of extortion or corruption against her. The manner in which she was heckled on Wednesday is a matter of shame for a civilised and democratic society. Every person in a civilised society should protest against such barbarity, Bhattacharya wrote.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon while Moitra was attending an internal Trinamool Congress meeting at the party office near National Highway 34 in Kaliganj, Nadia district.

According to reports, a group of protesters gathered outside the party office during the meeting and allegedly hurled eggs and cow dung at the building while shouting abusive slogans against the Krishnanagar MP.

Following the incident, Moitra went live on Facebook from the second floor of the party office, where she expressed her anger over the attack and also criticised a section of her own party.

Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee also condemned the incident in a detailed social media post. He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was behind the attack on his party colleague.

However, West Bengal BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya rejected the allegation, denying any involvement of his party. He claimed that the protest was carried out by disgruntled Trinamool Congress workers.

The incident has triggered fresh political sparring in West Bengal, with both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP trading allegations over responsibility for the protest.
