SNDP extends full support to Kerala govt's ''Operation Toofan' against drugs

Alappuzha, 02 July (H.S.): SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan has extended the organisation's full support to the Kerala government's anti-narcotics campaign, Operation Toofan, describing it as a timely and much-needed initiative to protect the younger generation from the growing drug menace.

In an article published in the SNDP mouthpiece Yoganadam, Vellappally said the campaign was one of the most meaningful and socially beneficial initiatives undertaken by the government and deserved appreciation. He, however, cautioned that the drive should not become a symbolic exercise, urging the authorities to ensure sustained and effective action against drug trafficking networks.

Describing substance abuse as one of the gravest challenges confronting Kerala, Vellappally said the rapid spread of narcotics among school and college students and young people had become a matter of deep concern. Parents, he noted, were increasingly alarmed by frequent reports of youngsters falling victim to addiction, irrespective of gender.

He said the situation had worsened in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, with narcotics infiltrating even rural areas. According to him, organised drug syndicates with international links were targeting students and youth, exploiting their aspirations and vulnerabilities for financial gain. The growing number of young people, including women, being arrested in drug-related cases highlighted the seriousness of the crisis, he added.

Vellappally praised Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and the V.D. Satheesan government for launching Operation Toofan, saying the public had placed high expectations on the campaign. He stressed that the Home Department, Excise Department and the entire government machinery must work in coordination to ensure its success.

Reaffirming SNDP Yogam's commitment, Vellappally said the organisation and its cadre were ready to stand with the government in the fight against narcotics. He also appealed to political parties, social organisations and cultural bodies to set aside ideological differences and unite behind the campaign, saying protecting the younger generation was a collective responsibility that transcended politics.
