Kolkata, 02 July (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across South Bengal over the next few days. According to the weather office, a strong low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on July 3, which is expected to trigger widespread rain, thunderstorms and lightning across several districts of South Bengal between July 4 and July 8.
Special caution has been issued for the coastal districts, while fishermen have been advised to remain vigilant due to the possibility of rough sea conditions and high waves.
The sky over Kolkata remained partly cloudy on Thursday morning. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the city on Thursday and Friday, adding that no major change in the prevailing weather conditions is expected immediately. However, an orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Kolkata.
On Thursday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 27.3 degrees Celsius, which was 0.6 degrees above normal. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 31.1 degrees Celsius, about 1.5 degrees below normal.
The weather department said rainfall activity over South Bengal is likely to remain relatively subdued on Thursday and Friday, leading to humid conditions. However, the weather is expected to deteriorate rapidly from the weekend as the low-pressure system strengthens. Several districts in the Gangetic plains of South Bengal are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.
No major weather warning has been issued for North Bengal at present. According to the IMD, the region is expected to continue receiving light to moderate rainfall, with no significant weather threat anticipated in the coming days.
