Oakland, 19 July (H.S.): Los Angeles Knight Riders scripted history by clinching their maiden Major League Cricket (MLC) title, defeating defending champions Washington Freedom by a dramatic one-run margin in a thrilling final at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday night (local time). The victory ended the three-year dominance of MI New York and Washington Freedom in the tournament.

Batting first, LA Knight Riders were bowled out for 164 in 19.4 overs. Andre Fletcher top-scored with a brisk 47 off 27 balls, while Colin Munro contributed 40 from 29 deliveries and Matthew Tromp added a quickfire 39 off 21 balls to lift the innings.

For Washington Freedom, Ben Dwarshuis claimed three wickets, while Rachin Ravindra and Nikhil Chaudhary picked up two wickets each.

Chasing a target of 165, Washington Freedom suffered an early setback as veteran spinner Sunil Narine and captain Jason Holder applied relentless pressure with disciplined bowling.

Narine produced a match-winning spell, returning figures of 3 for 13 in his four overs, while Holder also claimed three crucial wickets to keep the defending champions under control throughout the chase.

Despite the collapse, Obus Pienaar launched a sensational counterattack with an unbeaten 53 off just 24 balls, taking the contest down to the closing deliveries and keeping Washington's hopes alive. However, his valiant effort fell just short as Washington Freedom finished on 163 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs, falling one run short of the target.

Having displayed consistent form throughout the tournament, LA Knight Riders held their nerve under immense pressure in the final to lift the Major League Cricket trophy for the first time in franchise history.
