Kottayam, 18 July (H.S):Kerala is observing the third death anniversary of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday, with political leaders, party workers and admirers paying tribute to one of the state's most widely respected public figures. The anniversary comes at a politically significant moment, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) back in power after ending a decade of Left rule.
Special prayers and commemorative events are being held at Chandy's hometown of Puthuppally, where thousands are expected to gather. Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal will inaugurate the main memorial meeting, while Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is scheduled to visit Chandy's tomb later in the day to offer floral tributes.
Three years after his passing, Chandy continues to occupy a unique place in Kerala's political landscape. Known for his accessibility and people-centric approach, he built a reputation as a leader who remained closely connected with ordinary citizens throughout his political career. His willingness to meet people from all walks of life and personally intervene in their grievances earned him admiration that extended well beyond party lines.
The unprecedented public response during the funeral procession from Thiruvananthapuram to Puthuppally reflected the affection he commanded across the state. Political differences faded into the background as lakhs of people lined the route to bid farewell to a leader many regarded as compassionate and approachable.
This year's anniversary carries added emotional significance for the Congress, as the party has once again secured power in Kerala under a Congress chief minister for the first time since Chandy demitted office. While the UDF celebrates its return to government, many Congress workers continue to feel the absence of the leader who shaped the party's organisational culture for decades.
Chandy was known for consulting everyone—from grassroots KSU workers to senior party leaders—before taking decisions, irrespective of how minor the issue appeared. His political acumen, consensus-building skills and ability to maintain strong relationships with diverse community organisations remain defining aspects of his legacy in Kerala politics.
