Hooghly, 18 July (H.S.): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, accompanied by local residents, staged protests outside the residences of several Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillors in Serampore Municipality on Saturday, demanding their immediate resignation. The protesters issued an ultimatum, asking the councillors to step down by 5 p.m., failing which they warned of launching an indefinite sit-in outside their homes.
According to local sources, demonstrations were held outside the residences of Ward No. 15 councillor Jhuma Shil, Ward No. 17 councillor Milan Mukherjee, Ward No. 10 councillor Baby Ghosh, and Ward No. 22 councillor Tiyasha Mukherjee. Protesters raised slogans against the councillors and called for their immediate resignation.
BJP leaders alleged that in view of the alleged irregularities in the municipality and the recent political developments, the councillors should resign on moral grounds.
The protests come amid a political crisis in the 29-member Serampore Municipality. Since the new state government assumed office, 15 TMC councillors, including the Chairman and Vice-Chairman, have already resigned, increasing pressure on the remaining members of the civic board.
