Hyderabad, July 16 (HS): A private school in Hyderabad has come under scrutiny after the parents of a Class II student lodged a complaint alleging that their six-year-old son was assigned Islamic prayers as homework.

According to the complaint, the child returned home with a homework diary instructing him to read the First and Second Kalma and Fateh. The parents alleged that they questioned the school management, stating that their son should not be required to undertake religious instruction contrary to their faith.

The family has sought action from the Education Department, alleging that the incident caused mental distress to the child.

The issue has also drawn political attention, with BJP leaders visiting the family and demanding a detailed inquiry into the matter.

Police said the complaint is under inquiry and appealed to the public not to draw conclusions before the investigation is completed.

According to the preliminary inquiry, the classroom teacher told police that the homework entry was inadvertently written in the student's diary. Police said the class has 25 students, of whom only one is a Hindu.

Officials said the parents have submitted a complaint and that legal opinion will be obtained before any further action is initiated.
