Guwahati, 16 July (HS): A massive fire reduced a house to ashes in Assam's Bajali district late Wednesday night, causing property damage worth several lakhs.

According to police, the incident took place at Ajasantar village under Sarupeta. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information and launched an operation to bring the blaze under control.

The house belonging to Ajit Pathak was completely destroyed in the fire. A domestic animal was also burnt to death, while large quantities of paddy, straw and other household belongings were reduced to ashes.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police suspect the blaze may have been triggered by a short circuit or an oil lamp. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.---------------
